MARDİN
Founded on the top of a mountain, Mardin is one of the oldest towns of Mesopotamia and the first stop of Turks in Anatolia. The myth, that Mardin comes to mean “castle” stems, from the fact that there are many castles in the city. These castles are: Mardin Castle, Kız Castle, Kalıtmara, Arur Castle, Erdemeşt Castle. One of the most significant symbols of the city where the handcraftsmanship is very developed is the delicate embroidery work done on the wire-like gold and silver (that is specifically called Telkari) and turning it into ornaments and jewelry. Mardin has a very improved cuisine since it hosted many societies and used to be a meeting point of the caravan routes in the past. You can witness in Mardin the spicy, fatty diet of the East Anatolia. Famous examples of the local cuisine are çiğ köfte (raw meat ball), Mardin Kebab, Kibbe, İçli köfte (Ikbebat – stuffed bulgur – ground meat), lebeniye soup, Syrian Wine, pomegranate juice, mahlep liqueur, sumac juice, grape juice and mahlep raki.
