Maçka
TRABZON MAÇKA
In Maçka, one of the most important towns on the Eastern part of Black Sea region and especially Trabzon, there are a number of historical assets. In the town hosting the world-wide known Sümela Monastery, also the Vazelon and Kuştul Monasteries are attracting lots of attention. Maçka, located on the Trabzon-Gümüşhane highway, has an attitude of 365 meters. The uplands covered with forests are also very famous.
Şolma Upland: Since there is no room for accommodation, on the encamping area with the attitude of 1,700 meters, it is better to bring your camping materials.
Mavura Upland: It is 18.5 km. away from Maçka. The soil road between Mavura and Solma uplands is ideal for jogging, with its 3.5 km. length.
Kiraz Upland: It is 22 km. away from Maçka, it is also possible to reach from Gürgenağaç village via the soil road having 7 km length. You can go fishing to the river and also enjoy grass-skating on this upland having an attitude of 1,850 meters. The third Friday of July is the "Ayeser Fest".
Sümela Monastery: It was first built by two monks from Athens by expanding a cave in 4th century; the it is expanded again during 6th and 13th centuries. The monastery, dedicated to Virgin Mary, takes its name from the Latin saying "Panaghia Tou Menas" (The Virgin of the Black Mountain).
Vazelon Monastery: It is located among the pine forests on Gümüşhane highway, 8 km. away from Maçka. The first architecture and the exact building date are not known. On the other hand, according to some researchers, it is thought to be built between 270 - 317 B.C.
Kuştul Monastery: The monastery located in Kuştul Village, near to Esiroğlu Town of Maçka, is established on a hill from which the whole valley is visible. It is not regarded as important as the other monasteries in terms of architecture; nevertheless it is attracting tourists’ attention.
Şolma Upland is 22 km. away from the city center and surrounded by pine forests. It is worth seeing with its springs and natural beauties.
There are numerous uplands worth seeing in Maçka region. Some of them can be counted as Kiraz, Lapazan, Gulindağı, Maura and Lişer. On the 7th of July, there is a celebration of "Soğuksu Festival" with the contribution of the population coming from the villages around, in Lişer.
