Edirne
EdirneFound north of Tekirdağ between Turkey and Greece, Edirne was the Ottoman capital for many years, whilst in the 18th century it became one of Europe’s 7th largest cities.
Many important structures on a historical and architectural level are due to the city being the capital of the Ottoman Empire for 100 years.
Edirne, with its mosques, religious centres, bridges, old market places, caravanserais and palaces is a living museum.
Edirne houses
Houses were timber framed with stone foundations and exteriors were generally plastered. They had broad eaves and jutting bays and the entrances were set back slightly in the centre of the main façade.

Ruins and protected areas
Enez antique city: Whilst Enez (Ainos) was an important port in historical times; nowadays it is 3.5km inland from the coast. Restored many times throughout history, Enez castle is definitely worth seeing. At the same time there is also a church which dates to 6th century BC. Some carved graves and beaches with crystal clear waters. ‘Dolmenler’ (Menhir stone graves) are found in Lalapaşa and date from 1000BC to 2000BC. During excavations certain pieces were found within these graves which are now displayed at the Edirne museum of Archaeology and Ethnography.
Palaces
Edirne palace: After the first palace was built in the reign of Sultan Murad I, the construction of Edirne palace to the west of Tunca began in 1450 over very large areas of land whilst Sultan Murad II reigned. After the death of the sultan in 1451, the construction of the palace was overseen by his son Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Amongst the remains are Cihannüma Kasrı, Kum Kasrı Hamamı, Babusseadse, Matbahi Amire and Adalet Kasrı.
Mosques
Selimiye mosque: Edirne’s most important monument, which was designed by Turkey’s greatest architect, Sinan, Selimiye mosque is one of the most beautiful examples of ottoman architecture. Built on the request of the Ottoman Sultan Selim II. between 1569-1575, this mosque is unrivalled and magnificently represents Turkish handicraft, stone masonry, tiles and fine paintings.
The cities other important mosques and churches are; Üç Şerefeli mosque, Muradiye mosque, II. Beyazit mosque and Küllesi, Eski mosque, Yıldırım mosque, Fatih mosque (Enez Aya Sofyası), Sokullu Külyesi (Kasım Paşa Külyesi), St George’s church and the Jewish synagogue.
Caravanserais
On a street which has a long row of shops, Rüstem Paşa Caravanserai is an interesting and classic example of ottoman architecture. It was built by the great architect Sinan for Rüstem Paşa, who was the Grand Vizier to Kanuni Sultan Süleyman.
Ekmekçioğlu Ahmed Paşa caravanserai was constructed by Defterdar (head of the financial department) Ekmekçioğlu Ahmed paşa by the order of Sultan Ahmet I. in 1609.
Bridges
Some of Edirne’s most important structures are its bridges. The imposing beauty of Edirne’s bridges, some of which were built outside of the city, are the work of the architect Sinan and are unrivalled by other cities.
The oldest of this cities bridges is from the time of Byzantine emperor Michael Palaiologos (1261-1282). The bridge was later restored (1420) by Gazi Mihal and is remembered by this name. In 1640 Kemankeş Kara Mustafa paşa added the sharp arched history mansion to this 27 sectioned bridge. The Şahabettin paşa (Saraçhane) bridge, which was constructed in 1451, has 12 arches and 11 pillars.
The major bridges of Edirne are Fatih Bridge, constructed in 1452 during the period of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Bayezid bridge, constructed by architect Hayrettin in 1488, the Saray (Kanuni) bridge, which was amongst the creations of architect Sinan in 1560, the Ekmekçizade Ahmed Paşa bridge which was constructed by Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa between the years 1608-1615 and the Meriç bridge (new bridge), which was constructed at the junction of Meriç and Arda rivers between 1842-1847.

Coming top of the list of Edirne’s great foods is a fried liver dish. People usually don’t leave without trying this delight.

You can enjoy shopping in an authentic atmosphere at the Ali Paşa indoor Bazaar. You can buy products which are particular to Edirne in Selimiye Arista Bazaar such as; Deva-i-misk sweets, white cheese and fragrant soaps. You can also find every imaginable kind of book in the old bookstores and in Saraçlar Street which is Edirne’s busiest street; you can find almond paste and various handicrafts.
Don’t leave without
Don’t leave without seeing Edirne museum, The Turkish- Islamic Museum of Art, Health Museum, Balkan war museum and Karaağaç, visiting Selimiye mosque, Eski mosque, Üç Şerifeli mosque. Ali Paşa indoor Bazaar and Bayezıd Külye, dining at Meriç and tasting Edirne’s fried liver, buying almond paste, deva-i misk sweets, fragrant soaps and white cheese and watching Kırk Pınar wrestling and culture festivals which are organized each year in the last week of June.
